We almost finished Chapter 1 this week. We worked on section 102 Pythonic Functions, 103 Defining Functions, 104 Algorithms and 105 Coding in Python. Below, you will find all our ScreenCasts and Python Code!

eText, eText, where fore art thou, eText?

I'm sorry to say it, but, online Calculus texts are just not ready for prime time! My school just purchased the latest edition of our favorite text with the understanding that my students would get etexts and the other classes would get hardcovers. Just look at my beat-up text pictured above (c) 1995 and you'll see why it was time to get a new book! So, I get the etext and it turns out that its only for one user and has to be reregistered each year??? This is outrageously expensive! I don't get the problem. I also teach Computer Science and have been using etexts for those classes for several years now without a problem. 

For my Computing classes, we simply bought a class set of each text and got a pdf version for free! Now, I just upload one chapter at a time to http://www.edmodo.com. That's all I'm asking for. The eText can easily be identical in content to the printed book as most authors and publishers generate pdfs now-a-days anyway! I don't need any extra digital content, I can create my own. If you want extra digital content, more power to you, but it will take longer to create the books and these books will be far from free.

CSH: Computer Science Honors Recruiting Office!


Welcome to Computing at Baldwin Senior High School! My name is Mr. Garcia. I teach in the Math Department at good old BSHS. I'm here today to encourage you to take Computer Science Honors aka CSH.




CSH is a new course I've been teaching since 1975 replacing Computer Math and Advanced Computer Math. How is that possible, you ask? Well, CSH is an introduction to programming and I've been teaching people how to program ever since I learned how. What's new about this course is that we just started using Python as our programming language of choice. We also just started using a new textbook about Discerete Mathematics using Python, http://www.skylit.com/mathandpython.html, pictured above. BTW, all your work is stored online and we use an eText, so you don't even have to bring anything to class!

Also, the first thing you'll notice is that I don't do Windows, and neither does my maid! We are currently using the 64bit Ubuntu 11.04 Linux Desktop which is a rock solid, programmer friendly system designed with network security, multitasking, multiprocessing and multiuser support built-in from the ground up. Computer Math continued CH7 on chip logic. We also played with Turtle Python. Computer Math is over and there's no Advanced Computer Math next semester. You will be sorely missed! Next year, Computer Math and Advanced Computer Math will be replaced by a full year Computer Science Honors. In this new course, we will do everything we do now re Discrete Math, Python and SAGE. Quarter II, Week 9: ScreenCasts, SmartNotes and Code, oh my!

OK, Quarter II is nearly over. I think we've made very good progress so far this year. AP Calculus BC and AP Computer Science are right on track so we should have a week or two left before AP Week for review! 


I will miss Computer Math as we finish Chip Logic next week, we'll have to say goodbye as we don't have Advanced Computer Math in the Spring this year. Hope to see you in AP Computer Science next year! 


preCalculus just finished CH9 on Vectors. We should have nearly all of Quarter IV for an intro to Calculus! 


Calculus Research Lab spent the whole semester on derivatives and applications using SAGE. I hope you got a lot out of it!

Quarter II, Week 8: ScreenCasts, SmartNotes and Code, oh my!

Welcome back! We just got back from break on the Tuesday after New Year's Day and its as if we never left! Talk about a short work week: here it is Friday and I'm already out sick again. I've never been sick with a cold so many times in one semester before.


AP Calculus BC spent the week on the concept of work and how to calculate it.

preCalculus for Seniors focused on review concepts from the last quiz for a requiz today! We also started talking about vectors in 2 and 3 dimensions.

Quarter II, Week 7: ScreenCasts, SmartNotes and Code, oh my!

AP Calculus BC finished Unit 6 and had a test on metrics aka measurement theory (applications of the definite integral). Last week we reviewed area and talked about volumes of revolution (disk, washer, shell) in dx and dy. This week we finished volumes with known cross sections as well as arc length and surface area.
