Teaching Computer Science Honors: Turtle Graphics, Recursion and VPython

Teaching Computer Science Honors: Turtle Graphics, Recursion and VPython!

NB1 - to install turtle.py on Ubuntu 12.04
sudo apt-get install idle

NB2 - to install VPython on Ubuntu 12.04:
sudo apt-get install python-visual
sudo apt-get install libgtkglextmm-x11-1.2-dev

NB3 - alternate NB2:
run vpythonxxx.exe under WINE!

This year we played around with Discrete Math, SAGE, Python, Turtle Graphics and Visual Python! Thanx go to Gary Litvin, Kirby Urner,  Erik Thompson, Allen Downey, William Stein, David Joyner and Gregor Lindl (in no particular order) for inspiring me!

We finished Turtle Graphics using "How to Think Like a Computer Scientist using Python." We spent the last few weeks on turtle.py and Recursion (Chapter 12). Now, we will start a final project: Intro to VPython!

My Summer Project will include finishing some VPython lessons for next year. Stay tuned...

This was a crazy week as we moved back to Room 429! We are finally back home after 6 months of rebuilding due to Sandy. Monday and Tuesday were normal days in the old room. Wednesday and Thursday was all about reinstalling the Lab. Friday, we used ROT13.py and Squares.py as "Hello World" programs to test our setup. All is well.

Teaching Computer Science Honors: Starting Turtle Graphics!

Teaching Computer Science Honors: Starting Turtle Graphics!

This week we had a test on Chip Logic Chapter 7! Then we started Turtle Graphics using "How to Think Like a Computer Scientist using Python!" We didn't get too far as I had Jury Duty.

Teaching Computer Science Honors: TI-83 BASIC Programming Case Study - More Loops!

Teaching Computer Science Honors: TI-83 BASIC Programming Case Study - More Loops!

This week we continued working with TI-83 BASIC! We wrote some more programs with For loops to calculate Riemann Sums!

I think my students enjoy this topic as they can take these skills to Math and Science class where they use TI-83s or TI-84s.

We'll take a look at TI-89 BASIC in a future case study. The TI-89 is more like SAGE in that it has a Computer Algebra System built in. Also, TI-89 BASIC uses functions just like Python.
